What is 420? The Green Holiday Explained

It’s April, which means we’re celebrating everything 420 in the cannabis community all month long. But every year around this time the same question keeps popping up… Why 420?! We’ve done our research here at Flora Terra and are here to give you the 4-1-1 on 4-2-0. So first things first: April 20th, or 4/20, has become a day synonymous with cannabis culture around the world. While many people use this day to celebrate the herb and its benefits, few know the true origins of 420.

Not surprisingly, our story of 420 begins locally! The history of 420 can be traced back to the early 1970s in San Rafael, California. A group of high school students, known as the Waldos, used to meet up at 4:20 pm to smoke cannabis. Think 5 everyday stoners, nothing crazy happening here! The term “420” was originally just a code word for them to use when discussing their plans without arousing suspicion.

The Waldos had connections to the Grateful Dead, a popular rock band at the time. The band’s fans, known as Deadheads, also began using the term 420 to refer to smoking cannabis. As the Grateful Dead gained popularity, so too did the term 420, which quickly spread throughout the cannabis community. Can you imagine a greater claim to fame for these rag-tag stoners?!

Over time, 420 became more than just a code word. It became a symbol of cannabis culture, representing the counterculture movement that embraced the herb and its benefits. In the 1990s, High Times magazine began using the term in its publications, further cementing its place in cannabis culture.

Today, 420 has become a global phenomenon. On April 20th each year, cannabis enthusiasts around the world gather to celebrate the plant and its benefits. Many dispensaries and cannabis businesses offer special deals and promotions on this day, making it one of the busiest days of the year for the industry.
